Removals Croydon Health and Safety Policy
Removals Croydon is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, customers, contractors and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and relocation activities. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with our services, including domestic and commercial removals, packing, loading and unloading, storage activities and transport operations.
Policy Objectives
Our objectives are to prevent injury, ill health, damage to property and unnecessary disruption during all moving and handling tasks. We aim to continually improve our health and safety performance by identifying hazards, assessing risks, implementing effective control measures and reviewing our procedures on a regular basis. We comply with relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry best practice applicable to moving and handling activities in our service areas.
Management Responsibilities
The management of Removals Croydon has overall responsibility for ensuring that adequate resources, systems and training are in place to manage health and safety. Management will ensure that this policy is communicated, understood, implemented and reviewed at appropriate intervals, and whenever there are significant changes to our operations or legal requirements.
Managers are responsible for conducting and documenting risk assessments for regular activities such as lifting and carrying, loading vehicles, operating equipment, working in customers homes and premises, and working on or near roads. They must ensure that appropriate safe systems of work and method statements are implemented and followed by employees and subcontractors.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees of Removals Croydon have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Staff must cooperate fully with management in observing safe working practices, reporting hazards, attending training sessions and using the safety equipment and protective clothing provided.
Employees must not misuse or interfere with any equipment provided for safety purposes. Any incident, near miss, injury, unsafe condition or damage to property must be reported to a supervisor or manager as soon as possible so that appropriate action can be taken to prevent recurrence.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Removals Croydon carries out risk assessments for all key activities, taking into account the specific nature of each removal project. Factors considered include access restrictions, stairs and lifts, parking arrangements, manual handling requirements, size and weight of items, fragile or high value goods, customer specific requirements and any environmental factors such as weather conditions.
Based on the risk assessment process, we put in place safe working practices. These include planning loading sequences, using appropriate lifting techniques, team lifts, mechanical aids where necessary, and clear communication between team members. Where additional control measures are identified, such as temporary barriers, signage or the need for extra staff, these will be arranged before work commences.
Manual Handling and Lifting
Manual handling is a core element of removal work, and it presents significant risk if not controlled. Removals Croydon provides training and guidance on safe lifting and carrying techniques, including assessing the load, using correct posture, keeping the load close to the body and avoiding twisting movements. Staff are instructed not to attempt to lift or move items that are beyond their personal capability and to seek assistance for heavy or awkward items.
Where possible, we use trolleys, dollies, sack trucks, moving straps and other suitable equipment to minimise the need for manual lifting and to reduce strain on the body. Items are secured properly when being moved to prevent sudden shifts or loss of balance.
Use of Vehicles and Driving Safety
Our vehicles are maintained in a roadworthy condition and are regularly inspected to ensure they meet safety standards. Drivers must hold the appropriate valid licence for the vehicles they operate and must comply with road traffic laws and company driving rules at all times.
Loads are distributed evenly and secured within the vehicle to prevent movement during transit. Drivers are responsible for checking that doors and ramps are closed and locked before departure and that any lifting platforms or steps are safely stowed. Journey planning will take into account traffic, access restrictions and safe parking locations near collection and delivery addresses.
Customer Premises and Public Safety
When working at customer homes, offices or other premises, Removals Croydon takes reasonable steps to protect the safety of occupants and visitors. Routes for carrying items are planned to minimise disruption, and care is taken to manage trip hazards such as trailing straps or packaging materials.
Where work takes place near public areas such as pavements or shared driveways, our teams will, where practicable, use safe work zones and clearly communicate with members of the public who may need to pass through an active work area. Our aim is to complete removal activities efficiently while maintaining safe access for others.
Equipment, Tools and Personal Protective Equipment
We provide appropriate equipment and tools for removal activities and ensure that they are maintained in good condition. This includes removal blankets, straps, trolleys, ramps and any other equipment necessary to conduct work safely.
Where risk assessments identify a need for personal protective equipment such as gloves, safety footwear or high visibility clothing, these are provided and must be used as directed. Damaged or defective equipment or protective items must be reported immediately so they can be repaired or replaced.
Training, Information and Supervision
Removals Croydon provides training and information so that employees understand the hazards associated with removal work and the control measures in place. Training may include induction training, manual handling techniques, vehicle safety, use of equipment, emergency procedures and site specific briefings.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for monitoring work on site to ensure that safe methods are followed and that staff are competent and confident in performing their tasks. Additional guidance or refresher training will be provided where necessary.
Health, Welfare and Fitness for Work
We recognise the physical nature of removal work and encourage employees to maintain good general health and fitness. Staff must not present themselves for work under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or when unfit for duty due to illness, injury or fatigue. Any health concerns that could affect the safety of work activities should be discussed with management so that appropriate adjustments can be considered.
Reasonable welfare provisions are ensured during work, including access to rest breaks, drinking water and facilities as appropriate to the job and location.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents and near misses are recorded and investigated to identify root causes and to help prevent recurrence. Where necessary, remedial measures, additional training or changes to procedures will be implemented.
Our staff are briefed on what to do in emergencies, including incidents such as injury, fire, vehicle breakdown or spillage of materials. Emergency contact arrangements are made known to team members before starting work.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
Removals Croydon regularly reviews this Health and Safety Policy and associated procedures to ensure they remain effective and relevant to our operations. We take into account feedback from employees and customers, lessons learned from incidents and changes in legal or industry requirements.
Our aim is to continually improve our health and safety performance, supporting a culture where safe working is an integral part of delivering professional, efficient and reliable removal services.
